UC Davis Customer Service Food Delivery Job Assignment

UC Davis Customer Service Food Delivery Job Assignment

The second data assignment requires you to collect your own data on workers’ experiences in your selected occupation. This project will require more time and planning to complete than the first assignment, so get started as soon as you can!

You may choose from the following methods for collecting your data. You are only required to use one.

  • Participant observation: If you are currently working in the occupation you’ve chosen, you may collect and analyze observational data from own experiences on at least one entire shift. Take field notes during and/or immediately after your shift. Your field notes should briefly summarize any interactions/activities/observations relevant to the key dimensions of work covered in the class. Try to make your notes as comprehensive as possible, because they will become your primary data! You will also need to submit a copy of your field notes with your write-up. You should omit identifying and/or sensitive information about your employer/coworkers/customers.
  • Your write-up for assignment will begin with a thorough description of your field site(s) or interviewee. Be sure to describe relevant features of the workplaces (i.e., type of business, level of activity, number of workers) for observational projects, or summarize your interviewee’s description of these features for their job. Also describe your sociological research question motivating this data project. Next, analyze your field or interview notes for themes relevant to the key dimensions of work discussed in class. Be sure to include specific quotes or examples from your data, as well as specific references to course material. You should also reflect on how your selected field site or interviewee may or may not represent typical experiences for other workers in the selected occupation.Your submission should be between four and seven pages (12-point double-spaced Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins).
